Sky Songs, scored for voice and percussion, is a reflection of my ongoing interest to combine the two oldest musical traditions in the world. With that in mind, the compositional process was heavily driven by melody and rhythm, however the text played an integral role in helping to choose the sounds and colors heard throughout the piece. For me, Carl Sandburg’s sky poetry was the perfect vehicle in which to explore the combinatorial possibilities of these two musical art forms.

Notes for Vocalist:

It was my intention to construct the vocal part in such a way that it can be sung by a variety of different voice parts, ranges, and timbres so long as he/she can perform the piece within the range written (men will sing one octave lower than written). The vocalist should not take a purely classical, popular, or ethnic approach to singing this piece. Instead, the vocalist should explore the possibilities of combining vocal styles/techniques to create a unique and idiosyncratic approach to each song.

"Impressions of Chinese Opera" (2012) by Gene Koshinski

Impressions of Chinese Opera, scored for percussion duo, depicts the four major elements of Chinese Opera: Singing, Dancing, Dialogue, and Martial Arts. By fusing together Chinese and Western percussion instruments, playing techniques, and compositional methods, a hybrid sound is created – a representation of “East meets West.” While some of the musical material is closely related to actual practices in Chinese Opera, the work itself should only be considered an impression of the art form from an “outsider’s” perspective. Impressions of Chinese Opera was also inspired by other Chinese musical art forms, aside from Opera. Such an example is the Kuai Ban (fast board) tradition, an art form that features spoken word (in storytelling format) accompanied by a pair of Chinese boards, which can be seen in movement II, Nian.

Circuit Breaker, scored for percussion sextet, functions as a concertino for percussion duo with percussion quartet accompaniment. While there is no set program, the inspiration behind the music came from various images of robots dancing. Initially, I was inspired by an internet video of twenty synchronized “Noa” robots dancing to a samba groove. Later I fabricated various other scenarios where a robot might dance if they perhaps led “normal lives” (at a party, nightclub, etc). All of the images involved robots that looked not of the advanced-type of the 21st C., but rather those antiquated and stereotypical types of decades past. These images were entertaining and often humorous, so I was inspired to make this piece a backing track for robots everywhere to “strut their stuff.” While there is not a set program, I would encourage the performers to conjure up a storyline (I certainly have my own!).

While the “program” of the work is light and humorous, the music itself is difficult and ranges in aesthetic and includes music that is angular, free, motoric, conversational, improvisatory, and of course groove-oriented. Simply put, the piece is full of color and fun!

"Get It!" (2011) by Gene Koshinski

Get It! was written for and premiered by bassoonist Dr. Jefferson Campbell. The piece itself is the product of a request made by Campbell to create a challenging concert piece for bassoon that stemmed from the popular music medium. Simply put, Get It! is designed to unleash the bassoonist’s inner “rock star!” The percussionist energetically supports the soloist with a cajon and a pair of foot-operated cymbals (Chinese cymbals used in this recording).

"Streamline" (2011) by Gene Koshinski

Streamline was commissioned by Jeremy Craycraft and The College of St. Scholastica Hand Drum Ensemble. The work itself is a reflection of my interest in world music as it blends together aspects of West African, Cuban, Haitian, and Chinese music. The use of indigenous instruments and playing techniques from these countries are seen and heard throughout the piece. Similar to many other hand drum works, Streamline contains sections reserved for improvisation. The performers are free to use these sections for anyone in the group to improvise. While the music of other cultures certainly influenced the overall sound of Streamline, the bulk of the piece is constructed from a contemporary music perspective.

"Concerto for Marimba and Choir with Percussion" (2010) by Gene Koshinski

Drumming and singing are without a doubt some of the oldest musical traditions in the world. As far back as I can remember I have always had an affinity for both of these practices, both of which are musical rituals that are a part of each and every one of my days. For a long time I had wanted to compose a work that combines these two art forms in just the right way. It was after several years of drafts that the work finally came to fruition in the fall of 2010. Concerto for Marimba and Choir with Percussion (scored for marimba soloist, 3 percussion, and choir) showcases the vibrant sound and versatility of the marimba while combining the two ancient art forms of drumming and singing, all viewed through a contemporary lens. The work functions just as other concerti, but with the exception of utilizing choir in place of an orchestra. The piece is in a standard three-movement concerto format with the addition of a brief introduction, which presents the main material heard throughout the work. Much of the musical vocabulary used throughout the concerto stems from the opening three-note motive heard in the altos (Eb, D, F#).

"Song and Dance" (2009) by Gene Koshinski

"Song and Dance" is scored for percussion duo in two movements: I. Song of the Metals; II. Dance of the Drums. The first movement features the kalimba accompanied by bells, djembe, shaker, and other small percussion instruments. A recording of birds singing accompanies the entire movement providing a background of nature sounds. The second movement is in stark contrast with very primal drumming. Interlocking groove-oriented patterns permeate the movement while a conch shell is used as a single-pitch melodic instrument. Both movements are dances, however two very different aesthetics. Instruments include:

Player 2: Bells, Ocean Drum, Shaker, Mark Tree, Claves, Djembe, 2 Bongos, 2 Congas, and Gliss Gong.

"And So the Wind Blew..." (2009) by Gene Koshinski

"And So the Wind Blew..." is scored for percussion duo. This 20-22 minute piece focuses on the sounds of nature, most specifically wind, but also water and other elements. The entire work is constructed around a specific set of tuned wind chimes used by player one. From this instrument stemmed all of the musical ideas heard in the piece. The bulk of the work focuses on sounds inspired by gamelan ensembles with a hint of other world music elements (including instruments themselves). Instruments include:

Player 1: Tuned wind chimes; Vibraphone; 2 Sistrum, 3 or more sets of porch wind chimes; Concert Bass Drum.

"Ceci N'est Pas Un Jouet" is scored for two handle-operated music boxes played by one or two performers. The overall idea of the piece is that very complex music can be created by using two separate and somewhat simple musical materials. The music boxes can play any tunes and performances should vary. Prelude Nuevo was inspired by some of my favorite musical "preludes." Preludes by Frederic Chopin and Clair Omar Musser are among those which came to mind when composing this work. This piece is meant to stand on its own and not be an introduction or preface to another composition. However, if the performer were to find a piece, or set of pieces, that work well paired up with Prelude Nuevo, then this piece would serve an additional purpose. "The Additive Method of Two-Mallet Study" (2007) by Gene Koshinski

"A unique, musical, and effective approach to the study of two-mallet performance." This method book (with its thousands of possible exercises) was developed through concentrated study and analysis of the two-mallet percussion solo repertoire and targets the most common technical challenges found throughout two-mallet works. Over sixty-five standard works were analyzed in order to discover the twenty most prominent technical challenges seen throughout the entire repertoire. The "Additive Method" breaks down two-mallet study into twenty categories of exercises, each category corresponding to a specific technical issue. In addition to the exercises, the book contains a section on technique (grip and stroke), a systematic guide to the method, an annotated two-mallet repertoire list, a repertoire analysis chart, and a practice journal. "Variations (after Viñao)" (2007) by Gene Koshinski

Scored for two-mallet marimba (4.3 octave), "Variations (after Viñao)" was commissioned by percussionist Tim Broscious and was inspired by Alejandro Viñao's landmark marimba solo, "Khan Variations." This 7-minute piece is a set of variations on an eight bar theme, each variation focusing on a variety of different musical elements. While none of the musical material was derived from Viñao's work, the compositional techniques employed were inspired by those seen in "Khan Variations." The work places high technical and musical demands on the performer with many challenges around every corner. This piece was the third work in a on-going series of two-mallet pieces intended for the concert hall. [college/professional]

"Caleidoscópio" (2007) by Gene Koshinski

Caleidoscópio, score for 5.0 octave marimba, was inspired by my study of the coordinational independence method developed by Brazilian conductor Jose Gramani, called “Ritmica" and a series of courses on the subject taught by his protege Rogerio Boccato. Portions of the “Ritmica” method focus on the simultaneous performance of unrelated meters/ostinati, which is were the bulk of Caleidoscópio is founded. The “B” section of the piece pays homage to the Brazilian roots of the method by hinting at a light samba feel and provided more of a melodic focus. [college/professional]
