I just finished a new two-mallet concert piece for 4.3 octave marimba. This is my fourth concert piece dedicated to two-mallet performance and was inspired by some of my favorite "preludes" throughout music history. Visit the compositions tab to learn more about this new piece.

09.03.08 | Koshinski wins Composition Contest
I'm happy to announce that I was selected as one of the winners of the recent snare drum etude composition contest hosted by the Percussive Arts Society Massachusetts Chapter. My snare drum piece "Homage to Carter" will be published in a new snare drum etude book called "The PAS MassChap 2008 Snare Drum Collection" which will be released at the PAS Massachusetts Day of Percussion on October 19. The book will be published by Bachovich Music Publications and available at Steve Weiss Music. The book will also be available at this year's PASIC in Austin.

07.25.08 | Hollinden Piece is Complete
The commission project with Dave Hollinden has finished. The end result, a brilliant new work for percussion duo entitled "Alchemy." This new contribution to percussion art music shows a different side to Hollinden's writing. The work features two medium set-ups consisting of diverse, but small, instruments. The 25 minutes of music focuses on both unison figures and difficult polyrhythmic figures including two composed solos (one for each performer).


06.18.08 | Performing Arts Institute
I will be teaching at the 6-week international Performing Arts Institute Summer Music Festival in Kingston, PA. I am currently Director of Percussion at the festival and have my duo in residence as well (Quey Percussion Duo). The festival is aimed toward serious high school musicians and includes a large variety of activities to choose from. Ensemble perform challenging repertoire and present a concert each week. Performing opportunities for percussionists include: Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Big Band, various jazz combos, private lessons, and a daily masterclass.


03.17.08 | Solo CD Project
I am currently working on a solo CD featuring new works for percussion. The recording will be released this summer (2008) and will include premiere recordings of David Macbride's "Staying the Course" and my "Variations (after Vinao)." Clips from the upcoming CD will be on the site soon!


02.10.08 | European Tour with Nebojsa Zivkovic
I have been asked to tour Germany (4 performances) and Slovenia (5 performances) with renowned percussionist/composer Nebjosa Zivkovic. The tour runs May 17 to June 4, 2008. View the schedule tab for specific dates and venues.


02.09.08 | Bassoon and Marimba?
My colleague and I just had a very charming piece written for us. The piece is entitled "Bagatelles for Bassoon and Marimba" written by Justin Rubin. The work is a set of 4 short and clever movements that exploit the wonderful qualities of both instruments. "Bagatelles for Bassoon and Marimba" will be premiered at Minnesota State University Moorhead on April 3, 2008.


01.22.08 | *New Piece: "Electric City"
I am currently working on a new piece for percussion trio entitled "Electric City." The work will be scored for three multi-percussionists and will be the focal point of many performances this spring including a solo tour in Minnesota and a residency at Angleton High School in Angleton, TX.

"Variations (after Viñao)," scored for 4.3 octave marimba solo (two-mallets) and commissioned by percussionist Tim Broscious, is the third and newest work in an ongoing series of short two-mallet concert pieces. For more information, click the compositions tab.


09.03.07 | New Quey Percussion Duo Commission
Composer Bruce Reiprich recently finished a new percussion work that was written for my duo (Quey Percussion Duo). The piece is entitled "A Thousand Grasses Bend With Dew" and is scored for marimba, vibraphone, 8 button gongs, 3 suspended cymbals, and 2 foot-operated tam-tams. QPD will be premiering the new work in spring 2008.


08.26.07 | New Work in Progress
I am currently in the process of composing a new work for two-mallet marimba solo that is being commissioned by percussionist Tim Broscious. The work is a series of variations on a single theme, which when completed, will round out a series of two mallet works written for marimba solo. The entire three-piece set will be premiered in Spring 2008.


08.18.07 | New Commission by Dave Hollinden
Quey Percussion Duo (Gene Koshinski/Tim Broscious) is currently leading a consortium of 12 percussionists to commission Dave Hollinden to compose a new work for percussion duo. The work is set to be completed by November 1st.


08.12.07 | "As One" now available!
"As One," scored for percussion duo, is now available from HoneyRock Publications (www.honeyrock.net). The piece is available in hardcopy form or in PDF format via a download. ($18 score/parts hardcopy; $14 score/parts PDF download)

"Caleidoscópio" scored for 5.0 octave marimba solo (two-mallets) is the newest work in an ongoing series of short two-mallet concert pieces.

05.24.07 | New Commission by David Macbride
"Flip" scored for 4-octave xylophone and homemade marimba written by the marvelous David Macbride is a recent commission of mine. I will be premiering the new work on an upcoming lecture recital (6.15.07) discussing the evolution of the two-mallet solo percussion repertoire.
